Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue

Has Chronic Fatigue Impaired Your Ability to Work?

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are serious health conditions that are difficult to diagnose. Many people suffer from Fibromyalgia or CFS for years before obtaining a medical diagnosis. Since Fibromyalgia and CFS cause pain and chronic fatigue, they can also cause depression and anxiety.

According to the National Fibromyalgia Foundation, more than 10 million people in the United States suffer from the condition. Since problems of fatigue, pain and depression can make it difficult for a person to maintain substantial gainful employment, some of the individuals who suffer from fibromyalgia or CFS are eligible to receive SSDI or SSI benefits.

Are You Eligible for SSDI or SSI Benefits?

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are government benefits administered through the Social Security Administration. SSDI benefits are available to people with a physical disability or mental disability that significantly impairs their ability to work. To be eligible for SSDI, you must have worked a sufficient period of time prior to filing for benefits. If you are not eligible for SSDI, you may be eligible for SSI.

SSI benefits are available to the elderly, blind and disabled. SSI benefits are provided to people with limited financial means. People 65 or older are eligible for SSI benefits even if they are not disabled, as long as they meet the financial requirements. Unlike SSDI, SSI does not require that you have worked for a minimum number of quarters to be eligible for benefits.
